RETHINKING LEADERSHIP - Lean Thinking for Daily Impact and Long-Term Resilience

In every corner of the organization — from the front lines to the boardroom — leadership is being tested. Fast-changing markets, shifts in workforce dynamics, disruptive tech, and increasing complexity call for more than quick fixes or top-down control. We need leaders who can think long-term while solving real problems today.

Lean Thinking offers a practical, human approach to leadership that builds capability at every level. It empowers individuals to experiment, solve problems, and improve daily — all while working toward a shared strategic purpose. This mindset isn’t reserved for CEOs; it's for anyone who leads people, from team leaders and managers to improvement coaches.

At this year’s Lean Global Connection, we’ll explore what it takes to lead with Lean in today’s world — and why organizations that do are more resilient, more agile, and more connected to what truly matters: delivering lasting value.

Through keynotes, panels, and real-world case studies from around the globe, we’ll dive into:

  • What Lean leadership looks like in action — from the shop floor to the C-suite.
  • How to develop leadership capabilities in everyone.
  • The role of Lean in building organizations that can adapt, improve, and thrive in uncertain times.
  • How Lean can both support a long-term strategic direction and address daily challenges.
  • Practical discussions on timely issues facing businesses today — from geopolitical shifts and Artificial Intelligence to front-line engagement.

Join the biggest lean conference in the world and learn how to lead differently, embracing humility and generating a lasting impact.

You’ll Never Walk Alone — A 15-Year Lean Journey

Once upon a time, there was a successful manager who rose all the way to MOL Group’s C-suite. He led with a traditional, hard-driving style, focused relentlessly on profit. But, as it often happens during a time of crisis, a fairy godmother appeared to show him a different path: eliminate waste, follow the flow, and the value will grow.
The rest is history… and you’ll hear it all in 30 minutes.

Managing on Purpose—An interview with Mark Reich

Mark Reich's Managing on Purpose is one of the most important lean books published in recent years. A hands-on guide to applying hoshin kanri—Toyota’s strategic planning method that connects long-term vision to daily execution—the book draws on Mark's decades of experience, combining real-world examples and a fictional case study to show how leaders can align teams, develop people, and drive continuous improvement. Don't miss this interview with Mark, facilitated by Matt Savas, to understand why Managing on Purpose should be on your bookshelf right now.

Efficiency Is on the Menu

Meet Omelegg, a very successful family-run omelette restaurant business in Amsterdam, founded in 2013 by Faraz Ghorbani and Nima Ghorbani. Their lean background has helped them accomplish a lot over the years. They streamlined their ordering process, resulting in 40% less walking for their staff. They reduced the ticket time (from order to payment) from 45 minutes in 2014 to 30 minutes this year. On average, every seat is sold 12 times during their opening hours, even though their doors close at 4:30 PM. In this session, you'll learn more about successfully running a restaurant using Lean Thinking.

Leadership?

In this thought-provoking session, John and Margie will dive deep into the nature of leadership — questioning what it truly means and how it’s often misunderstood. They'll explore key contrasts such as leadership versus its opposite, and leadership versus management, to uncover where real value lies in practice. They'll also revisit the timeless debate of whether leaders are born or made, examining insights from theorists, practitioners, and presentations from the Lean Global Connection 2025. The session invites participants to challenge assumptions and reflect on what effective leadership really looks like in today’s organizations.

Leadership Practice: Daily Management to Make Every Day a Good Day - José Ferro & Daniel Oliveira

3pm-5pm UTC | November 13th

Executing strategy in day-to-day operations remains one of the greatest challenges organizations face.

It’s not enough to have a well-designed strategy on paper — it’s essential to ensure it happens every day, at every level of the organization.

Based on the book “Daily Management to Execute Strategy” by Robson Gouveia and José Roberto Ferro, this workshop will help you develop leadership habits that connect daily work to strategic goals and strengthen a culture of learning and purposeful delivery.

You’ll learn how daily leadership practices within Daily Management can align teams, solve problems, and drive sustainable results.

More than just a management routine, this practice becomes a living system that connects people, purpose, and performance.

Hoshin Kanri: Turning plans into action through alignment - Rachel Reuter

8pm-10pm UTC November 13th

Strategy execution often fails due to vague plans and lack of alignment.

This workshop, based on the book "Managing on Purpose" by Mark Reich,  will show how hoshin kanri is used to breakdown strategic objectives and build alignment throughout an organization.

After an overview of the hoshin kanri process, participants will have the opportunity to practice building a hoshin and collaborating through catch ball.  Finally, you will reflect how to incorporate within own organization - putting what you've learned into practice.
